PEARS BY THE SEA original oil painting by Terrill Welch

A strange relationship really, pears and the sea. However, it was a joyful occasion on the day they were wedded in my en plein air painting. How did this all come about you might ask?

Well, one day not too long ago I got to thinking how the lovely pear has been painted and photographed for what seems like forever. They are a powerful symbol of abundance, cultivation or agriculture and culture. I want to marry them – at least for a while – with the sea because the sea is, at least for me, a symbol of eternal change and continuity. My desire is to go more deeply into our human relationship to our environment. A study of pears by the sea seems like a good place to start as any.

I set up my easel as the light changed quickly.

It was a grand day by the sea!

As the sea embraces the sky – and my pears of course!

Would you like a peek at the work in progress before I show you the completed painting? Yes? I thought you might…

I may paint another still life of pears by the sea but for now – this 12 x 12 inch oil on canvas is it…

  1. Delicious and I did my rain walk by the Bay this morning….the hikers are still up at Mt. Rainier but home for strawberry shortcake soon. What a birthday celebration it has been

Unlikely pairing – hmmm all the deep freeze puffy jackets in San Francisco at Thanksgiving and we are in our shirt sleeves and walking and wading on the beach!!

    • That is always a surprise Patricia when we go someplace where it is warm for us and cool for those adjusted to that climate 🙂 I like the looks that seem to say – there goes some crazy fools! Enjoy that shortcake and is it your birthday? Did I miss it?

      • It was my oldest daughter’s 33rd birthday on the solstice the 20th, She flew in to go hiking with her sisters and Dad at Mt. Rainier. Did not miss my birthday 🙂

I am on this hormone therapy, which is working, until July 6th – just the strawberries for me and none of the cake.

  2. Terrill – I love what you’ve done here. And the combination of color is the icing on the cake (or the pear, as the case may be).

In the second photograph — the close up — I love how you placed the pears in the rock’s natural “bowls.”

Pizza — any type of pizza — and peanut sauce. If you haven’t tried that unlikely combination, they fit hand-in-glove.

  3. What a beautiful way to spend the day. Creating such a wonderful painting. Nothing can give one more pleasure than a day by the sea. Check out my most recent posts of my visit to Tybee Island in GA. I have some digital photo art of the Ocean.

  4. I always love to see your ‘work in progress’ paintings Terrill, and this is yet another example of your diverse focus. You have brought to pears a distinct visual prominence here! Recently I found the most unlikely film genre to be quite artistically satisfying – the spaghetti western! Ha!
